![]() ![]() Once again, the ambient noise levels were really high. This is basically how I lost my Seawolf, so this was kind of a ballsy move. I attacked these guys right off the coast in water that was only 260 feet deep and I was starting to run low on weapons. At least this time they weren't from a friendly country like the last time XD.Īfter popping the 2 Box Boats, I was sent off the coast of Nigbo to kill amphibs that were bringing reinforcements to China's attempt to invade Taiwan. So once again, I'm killing "neutral" merchantmen. In game Russia can't get that mad for my sinking their ships when they're selling tons of war material to the enemy and sailing their ships in an escorted convoy with belligerent ships." So I just sunk the Russians too and F them. This time I just sunk them both with Tomahawks and basically said, "Whelp 1 ship is Chinese and 1 is Soviet. The other was flying the flag of the USSR. Well, last time I sunk the ships flying PRC colors and I failed the mission. That's the flag of the People's Republic of China, so I figured that would indicate Chinese ships. The last time I got this mission I sailed close enough to the merchant ships to ID their flags and I sunk the ships I saw with this flag. The in game briefing said that Russia was supplying China with materials and loading them onto Chinese ships to be shipped. The Russians are selling China tons of war supplies because their economy is crap (in the game scenario). Once those guys were dead I popped a Tomahawk into the oiler and left.įrom there I was sent to go kill merchant ships. At the same time I was able to shoot another torpedo at the Romeo and set it to run right under the surface, masked in the high noise, then drop it down right on top of him. The high surface noise meant that I could stay near the surface and fire torpedoes at the 2 frigates and they wouldn't hear it and the strong layer kept the Romeo from hearing it. Then I went up to periscope depth and ID'd the surface ships. The funny part was that the water was nice and deep with a really strong thermal layer, and the surface noise was real high, so I was able to detect the Romeo while I was under the layer. ![]() They also had a Romeo class sub with them. It turned out to be just 1 oiler and 2 escorts. The next mission I was given was to sail back up towards the East China Sea to take out a small group with some replenishment ships. There were 3 other groups of enemy submarines in the area and I just wanted to find the enemy cruisers and then GTFO. I managed to only get jumped by 1 weak surface patrol on my way between Taiwan and the Phillipines. Where I picked up today I had just completed a mission in the vicinity of the south end of Japan and I had to run all the way back down towards the Spratley Islands to kill some enemy guided missile cruisers. These two nice bits of hardware had been added just in the 3rd patrol. The loss of the Seawolf marked the end of my 2nd war patrol, but so far the first half of my 3rd war patrol had been profitable. The biggest losses are the extra weapons and the improved silencing of the Seawolf. After that, more depth is nice but beyond about 900 feet is really not that crucial. The shallower diving isn't really that big of a deal either because the water is either shallow, like 300 feet or less which sucks, or the water is deep, like 500 feet or more and while being able to go down to 1600 feet is nice at times the real gain is just being able to go down to about 600 feet. That's not as good as 12 Tomahawks, 8 Harpoons, 6 decoys, and 42 ADCAPs, but it's enough weapons to do some real work still. The Flight III Los Angeles class carries fewer weapons, but since I've got 12 VLS tubes I can still carry 12 Tomahawks, 4 decoys and 26 ADCAPs. While I do miss the higher speed, deeper diving capability, bigger weapons stow, and better cavitation characteristics (Seawolf can go faster in shallow water and stay more quiet) I find that some of these advantages are offset a bit. USS Seawolf (SSN 21) had been shot out from under me but USS San Juan (SSN 751) was going strong. When last I left off in Cold Waters I was halfway through my 3rd patrol of the war. I've been continuing this same campaign some more tonight. This thread is a follow on to the thread linked here. ![]()
